EdUpdate-2007-10-18THU

Oy,

The summer is gone. Many miles have been put on the motorcycle. I bought a brand spanking new Kawasaki Vulcan Nomad 1600 in late June, which now has over 2600 miles. All that by just riding locally and two trips to Arizona. One trip to Kingman (220 mile round trip), and one to visit my mom in Phoenix (615 mile roundtrip).

I enjoyed visiting with my mother, I call her 'mom' (Betty Thompson) and her husband Ray this summer. I was requested to sing a solo of a song I wrote in her little church. I used the same big band orchestra music that goes to the Frank Sinatra favorite, "Summer Wind". I wrote the new words to it "Beloved Friend" about Jesus! I suppose I did okay, no one left the church service!

My Friends Thomas and Sharon Tillery, whom I went to see get married last September of 2006, came down from Portland, Oregon and we spent some time going for drive to Red Rock park. Thomas was recovering from a broken ankle, so we didn't get to go for a hike. Nevertheless, we enjoyed our time together.

Those friends of mine who stay in touch by email are much appreciated. Lots of love via internet/email sayings, jokes, and such! Spread the love, spread it man!

On CraigsList, I found out about Hollin Models Agency needing Voice Over Talent, and was signed by them this summer. The company is just getting things going forward in the VO biz, and I'm glad to be a part of their team. I call my 'agent' Nik every week so he won't forget me! J

During Las Vegas Bike Fest 2007, I went on my first poker run. Not really a gambling thing, and I didn't win the 100,000 dollar grand prize, or any of the 1,000 dollar prizes either. Oh well. I did get a "Las Vegas Bike Fest 2007" tee-shirt and logo-pin however! Besides that, I really enjoyed the ride I went on for the poker run, solo, but satisfying! I was the first time I'd ridden down to Lake Mead, and I enjoyed the early morning sunrise on the lake!

Late summer I was emailed by a young lady, Marita Walton, that I had attended a voice over class in Los Angeles with back in 2005 with Rodney Saulsberry. I helped Marita get her Voice Over Demo together, no charge (pay it forward). And she shared with me about an interesting ongoing Voice Over group called Media Guilds International, - presided over by Betty Lougaris. Betty Lougaris trained under the famous voice of Hanna Barbera fame; Daws Butler! Betty also had a television role on General Hospital.

I attended three sessions of the Media Guilds, and I had a blast each time. I met some real neat people, and broke the ice on performing and doing cold readings again. To me it's like 'mind candy' one night per week! Being there also helped me as a confidence builder!

Last Friday on the 12th of October, I saw an ad on Craigs List that was asking for actors and wannabe actors to come to an audition for a local theatre production by Insurgo Theatre Movement for and upcoming production of a play titled "The Water Hen" by Polish artist Stanislaus Witkiewicz (1922).

Two years ago in acting class with help from my instructor Shatha Hicks of Second City, I came up my first monologue. I haven't performed it since then. Then, Monday the 15th, three days ago, I found out that the auditions were for the next nite Tuesday the 16th at 7pm, monologue requested! I stayed up until midnite re-committing to memory the monologue I had harvested myself from Norwegian dramatist Henrick Ibsen's "A Doll's House" in act three.

My attention to earliness was appreciated, as I walked in at 6:37 or so. John Beene, the director of Insurgo met me as I marched in to the audition theatre. He recognized me from the headshot I had emailed him and was eager to have me get signed in and present my monologue. After the paperwork was perfunctorily completed, I was ready. No stalling, no reviewing, just a short chat with the director and up on the stage for my monologue.

Announcing myself, my source, and my part, I began.  I had a swell beginning, then, dropping the third line, I acted just like a pro and began to adlib, hoping the line would mysteriously appear in my mental projector so I could continue. But nooooo, or alas, maybe even malarky! I had to fess-up, pause, recollect, and then, it came rushing to me like the kiss at the end of a wet fist! I continued on, unobstructed by the "memory-lapse-wall" through to the end. I felt the part. I was the part. I even hugged my imaginary wife of the scene.

The remainder went swell, I got a 'call-back' before exiting the stage, and assigned sides (lines) to be read at the call back reads the next evening. John asked me to read for the part of "Father" otherwise known as Albert Valpor, an old man, former skipper of a merchant ship. Short, broad-shouldered, but not obese. Nautical garb. Beret with a light blue pompon. White Vandyke beard. White moustache. Also to read for the part of Typowicz A businessman, clean-shaven, short gray hair, grown corpulent with power.

Father/Albert Valpor is quite the character and a major player in the performance, and this is the one I will be. John called upon me to read for Father during the call-back and I read for nothing else. With his excellent and astute direction, we were already nailing the Father character.

The show dates are:

NOVEMBER 24TH, 2007 2PM - Saturday

NOVEMBER 30TH, 2007 8PM - Friday

DECEMBER 2nd, 2007 2PM - Sunday

DECEMBER 5th, 2007 8PM - Wednesday

DECEMBER 13th, 2007 8PM - Thursday

So, if you are in Las Vegas during any of these dates, make sure to fit "The Water Hen" into your schedule!

Besides upcoming theatre, I am recording audio books, and working with my podcast client, Tom Perkins of Fitness Business Radio fame. He is developing some audio products, and of course I am a part of that since I am his 'audio and voice over guy'!

I also have a new website that tickled my fancy, no direct reason, just go check it out if you have ever thought of getting a dog. I wrote a little piece of prose, a one minute sentence, with some music behind it, it became the basis of the site. I Wanna Get A Dog. Check out the 'Bark Woof Grrr' page too, it's very patriotic!

The recording of 100 to 130 year old copyright expired audio books is coming along a little slowly, but there a comin'! Of course my full time job here at KKVV radio is always great!

I'll be going to SoCal to visit my sons in a few weeks. My grandson Aiden is having his first year birthday party! Grandpa's gotta be there eh?!

Enough EdUpdate for now…

Love ya, GBU

Ed
