I posted this on FaceBook in the page: cleftAdvocate.
I thought I'd share it via email for those of you not of FaceBookery fanaticism! ;-)

I was at an acting/modeling audition last evening. I was asked to smile really BIG and show my teeth. That is still a difficult thing to do due to the repair of my cleft lip from when I was an infant. However I didn't say a thing, I just did what I could to please the director of the audition. I didn't make excuses, apologize, or anything other than give as toothful smile as I could!

I was explaining later to a young adolescent actor friend what to expect in the audition, and how I did the best I could. She never had any idea of my cleft lip scar. It goes to show that when you work through, and work past a difficulty, most folks will never know that there was a difficulty that you had to work through. It will make you stronger though!

When someone makes excuses for not doing well in their acting out facial expressions, or in their pronuciation or speaking capabilities, I know that they are often building a wall for themselves. Then I will sometimes share what I have overcome so that they may possibly gain the strength within themself to overcome their own inivisible wall!
